The Bitter Sweet Love Story completes ’13 years’

‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, whether it’s about the perfect story, screenplay, star cast, music or best dialogues,this film hits the list as it is considered as one of the best movies of Bollywood till date. Released on 28 November 2003, this epic movie completes 13 years today and still it’s very much loved by the audience. A bitter-sweet love story, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan, this was the film that made Shah Rukh the most popular actor overseas. This film was released in 2003 on 28th November and now its been 13 years of it but still the film has left such an immense impact that it is still fresh in the minds of its viewers.


This Indian romantic film was directed by Nikhil Advani and the film was written by Karan Johar and Niranjan Iyengar and produced by Yash Johar and Karan Johar under their Dharma Productions banner. The soundtrack for the film was composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar.

This film was wrapped in a tragic love story and friendship the film was an emotional ride for the audience and was said to be inspired from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Anand’.

Kal Ho Naa Ho was promoted with the tag-line “A Story of a Lifetime… In a Heartbeat”. This film provides its viewers with tremendous love dialogues which inspired them so much that still its been used in various forms of expressing their love for their loved ones.


 Like if its their beginning of friendship then,” Pyar Ka Pehla Kadam Dosti Hai, Aur Akhiri Bhi… Bas Beech Ke Kadam Reh Gaye Hain..”.


If its about confessing feelings to someone then,” Mae Aankhen Band Karta Hun Toh Tumhe Dekhta Hun.. Aankhen Kholta Hun Toh Tumhe Dekhna Chahta Hun.. Tum Paas Nahi Hoti Ho Toh Tumhe Chaaron Taraf Mehsus Karta Hun.. Har Pal Har Ghadi Har Waqt..”.


If it comes to motivation for life then,” Jeeyo.. Khush Raho.. Muskurao.. Kya Pata.. Kal Ho Na Ho..”, and so on..

 Karan Johar and Niranjan Iyengar has done a fabulous job by writing such an inspiring and motivating dialogues for the film that it has left a great impact on the viewers which will always be remembered. 

Some Unknown Facts About The Film:

The movie which was shot beautifully in the New York City was not actually the first choice of the producer Karan Johar who wanted to shoot the movie in Toronto. The makers change their plan at the last moment due to ongoing SARS scare.

Abhishek Bachchan and Vivek Oberoi were approached for Saif Ali Khan’s role but the role of Aman (Shah Rukh Khan) and Rohit (Saif Ali Khan) was decided from the beginning unlike the role of Naina.


The role of ‘Naina’ was originally written by keeping Kareena Kapoor in mind but she demanded higher fees which eventually forced the makers for change. Later, this role was given to Preity Zinta and it was one of her best performances indeed.


Karan Johar complied with international copyright laws and bought the license to the rights to Roy Orbison’s ‘Pretty Woman’ which is featured in the film. This was the first song in the movie and it was declared a hit among Indian audience.


Originally role of Naina’s mother was supposed to be played by Neetu Singh who was keen on her comeback, but the makers had something else in mind and finally they cast Jaya Bachchan for this important role.


The modifications and dresses of Jia’s dolls were actually made by Preity Zinta the day before the shooting of the scene as the famous celebrity designer Manish Malhotra was busy creating some exclusive designs for the star cast in the movie.


Anil Mehta, the cinematographer of the movie played Naina’s father who appears briefly at the starting of the film.


The famous fashion magazine V’ogue’ also plays a little role in ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ as the magazine’s editor, Anaita Shroff Adajania has done a cameo by appearing as Naina’s classmate Geeta.


Youssoupha sampled the sad version of ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ for his song ‘Babylone Zoo’.


The name of the movie ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ was itself became so famous but you know this movie was originally titled as ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ but Karan Johar decided to save this title for his 2006 movie instead.

This ‘All Time Blockbuster’ movie won two National Awards and seven Filmfare Awards.
